Beyond the Parking Lot: Discovering the Thrill and Community of Autocross at Lime Rock Park

In a recent conversation with Just Hands co-founder, Torsten Gross, Stephen Huntley, Track Programs Manager, shares the remarkable journey of Lime Rock's autocross program, revealing a vibrant community and a unique approach that shatters the typical perception of cones and empty parking lots.

From Humble Beginnings to a Thriving Motorsport Scene

What began as a small offering has exploded in popularity, witnessing an astounding 800% growth in participation over the past three years. From around 200 drivers annually, Lime Rock now welcomes almost  2,000 eager individuals looking to test their skills and the limits of their vehicles. This surge isn't just about speed; it's about the unique environment and welcoming spirit that Stephen and his team have cultivated.

The Lime Rock Difference: A Real Track, Real Learning

FCP Euro Proving Grounds Autocross at Lime Rock Park

"Lime Rock uses a purpose-built circuit, the FCP Proving Grounds," Stephen explains, highlighting a key differentiator. "In its largest configuration, it's 3/4 of a mile with 11 turns, actually 50% longer than the NASCAR short tracks." This dedicated circuit, complete with elevation changes and real curbing, offers a far more engaging and educational experience than a typical autocross setup. The ability to run lap after lap provides immediate feedback, allowing drivers to experiment and learn in real-time, a stark contrast to the single-run format many are accustomed to. "You can test different lines. 'I tried this in this corner, and it was different than what I did last time, but it felt faster.'"

A Welcoming Community for Drivers of All Levels

But the appeal of Lime Rock autocross extends far beyond the challenging circuit. Stephen emphasizes the welcoming community that has blossomed. "About 40% of the seats are usually newbie," he notes. "The cool thing about those guys [the experienced drivers] is they're super friendly, incredibly welcoming, so they're always offering tips." This supportive atmosphere helps dispel the intimidation factor that often accompanies motorsport, fostering connections and even lasting friendships among participants.

"Within an hour, you'll be talking about what tires you want to put on it, or what suspension upgrades,"

Partnering with Purpose: The Just Hands Foundation

The Lime Rock autocross program also proudly partners with the Just Hands Foundation, an organization dedicated to empowering individuals through adaptive driving and motorsports opportunities. Stephen speaks enthusiastically about this collaboration: "I love working with you guys. The first time you had me drive one of your cars, I was out of my depth... but once I got the hand controls, it was really cool." He highlights the foundation's ability to demonstrate that driving and enjoying motorsports are accessible to everyone, regardless of physical limitations. "It shows the normal competitors that there's no reason not to do it."

Stephen also appreciates the positive energy and camaraderie that the Just Hands team brings to the events. "You guys are always joking around, you guys are always happy to be there," he says. He fondly recalls an early experience with Torsten behind the wheel: "I remember the first time you were there with the BMW... you don't lack any self-preservation at all. You just pulled away, and I was like, 'I like this guy, this is our guy! And man, he's fast!!'" This shared passion and enthusiasm create a more vibrant and inclusive atmosphere for all participants. "Working with you guys has been such a pleasure. It's so much fun."

Your First Autocross Day: What to Expect

For those curious about trying autocross for the first time at Lime Rock, Stephen paints a clear picture of the day. Newcomers receive a dedicated track walk and initial instruction on a lower course before venturing onto the full circuit. "We always lead everyone around for a few laps behind a pace car, so they can see the layout and importantly, also know where they're getting off." The day culminates in a thrilling "shootout" timing session, where drivers get a clear track to push themselves and their cars.

Debunking the Myths: It's Not What You Think

Addressing common misconceptions, Stephen is clear: "You don't need a helmet. And almost any car is welcome." He goes on to say "We've had everything out there from McLarens to '94 Suburbans. You can run anything aslong as it has tires and seatbelts." This inclusivity is a cornerstone of the program, with many participants surprised by the hidden capabilities of their daily drivers. "They come off and go, 'I had no idea my car could do that!'"

Even rainy days are embraced as valuable learning opportunities. "You're gonna learn more on a wet track than you ever will on a dry track," Stephen asserts.

Looking Ahead: Karting and a Dedicated Track Car

Looking to the future, Lime Rock is expanding its offerings with a new karting program and an exciting project race car – a second-generation Mini Cooper S being built specifically for the proving grounds. "The cool thing is we're going to leave the front passenger seat," Stephen reveals. "So that will be the car we use to lead people around, but more importantly, somebody who wants to feel what it's like to ride with myself or one of the instructors directly on the line will be able to hop in."

Lime Rock Park's autocross program is more than just a driving event; it's a gateway to a passionate community, a chance to discover the true potential of your vehicle, and an exhilarating experience that redefines what autocross can be – made even richer by its meaningful partnership with the Just Hands Foundation. As Stephen aptly puts it, it's about "having fun and knowing the car" in a safe and supportive environment for everyone.
