Over the years I’ve been on track, I’ve learned different things about what is necessary—and equally important, what isn’t—for your first car. This guide covers what you need, what you don't, and what it could cost; especially for those using hand controls.

This post is about a partnership that feels deeply personal to me. What started as a conversation with Volkswagen at the Abilities Expo turned into something real—built on trust, shared values, and showing up when it matters. Volkswagen didn’t just support the Just Hands Foundation in words; they backed it with action, including donating a 2025 GTI and standing beside us at moments that mattered most. The GTI was my first car, the one that gave me freedom and independence, so seeing it now serve a mission centered on access and joy behind the wheel feels like coming full circle. This isn’t about sponsorship—it’s about belief, people, and creating a future where driving truly is for all.

High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE) offers equal instruction for able-bodied and disabled drivers. While hand controls differ mechanically, focus remains on vehicle control. Students and instructors should clarify terms, adapt techniques, and foster inclusivity, making high-performance driving accessible to all.
